Opening of the Dam East Recreation Area

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Carlyle Lake will reopen a portion of the area, formerly known as the South Shore State Park on April 12, 2017. The newly opened Day Use Area, now part of the Dam East Recreation Area, will provide visitors an opportunity to bank fish, picnic, and view wildlife.

Due to several years of reduced budgets by the State of Illinois and lack of maintenance, the Corps of Engineers terminated the South Shore lease and closed the area in October 2016 to allow for work to be completed to make the area safe for public access. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will continue to manage the lands adjacent to the area, owned by the State of Illinois and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers continues to work closely with them on other initiatives at Carlyle Lake.
